Sausalito Art Walk charges no fee to participants. Artist
participants are welcome only to show fine art they personally have
created. Our
mission is to provide a platform for artists from our region, of all
disciplines and genres, to highlight their accomplishments. This
is our response to the unfortunate lack of representation of local
artists work in the galleries and art exhibitions in our area. We want
to encourage the local art community while keeping the event organized.
We offer an equal opportunity for artists to exhibit regardless of
their medium, subject matter and the notoriety they may or may not
have received for their art. Our guidelines were put in place to keep
things organized and running smoothly, while meeting the regulations
enforced by the City of Sausalito and the State of California. We all
hate rules, but they are a necessary to avoid chaos at the event and
stay in step with the law.
Important notice to
all potential participants:
Only the Arts
Commission may assign artists positions along the street at Sausalito
Art Walk. All submissions are done through the email provided on this
web site (click
here for information on submitting your art ), or by contacting the
Arts Commission for assistance. Any artist that simply shows up, or is
assigned a position at Art Walk without going through the Arts Commission,
will be asked to leave and will be sent back to the individual that took
it upon themselves to do so. If they can not accommodate you within their
establishment, you will have no choice but to leave the event. We hope
to avoid this unpleasant occurrence and it can be avoided by following
the basic guidelines for artists provided on this web site. We are required
by the Park and Recreation Department to provide a master list of all
participating artists to the City of Sausalito, as a condition of our
permit. The Arts Commission is responsible for all activities occurring
outdoors along Caledonia Street. All artists participating in the event
must read the requirements for Sausalito Business Licenses (click
here for business license information), to determine is you will
need to acquire a permit to sell your artwork at the event.
Sorry no merchandise vendors are allowed to sell
at our event, absolutely no exceptions. Art Walk is not a flea market,
swap meet or garage sale to sell imported goods or stuff lying around
your house.
There
is a master list of all participants we are required to submit
to the City of Sausalito and it is provided to all organizers of
the event. We do check all easel artists to ensure they are
on the list of accepted artists.
Only fine art produced by that participant may be
exhibited or sold at Art Walk. There are two ways to exhibit at our
event. One is to show in one of the establishments in and around the
event. For more information read our guidelines for merchant artists
(click
here for merchant artist guidelines.) You will need to
communicate with the merchant about the terms of showing in their establishment,
so you know what to expect. You will also need to be present the night
of Art Walk. These receptions are always held on the second Wednesday
of the month from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, during Art Walk. We ask that
you only exhibit in a merchant space once per season, though you may
be allowed to participate as an easel artist in that same season.
The other option is being an "easel artist" and
creating your art along Caledonia Street at the event. This may be
an attractive option for many reasons. People love to see an artist
in action, feverishly creating their next masterpiece. If you choose
that option, you can participate most any month. You must still submit
your work to the Arts Commission, but there is often more available
space for easel artists to participate. For more information on participating
as an easel artist, visit our page with detailed information on the
option (click
here for easel artist guidelines ).
If your are selected to show at Art Walk, be sure you
have all your promotional materials in order. We suggest business cards
at minimum. Unless they have a way to contact
you, you will have no way of fully capitalizing on your participation
in the event.
It is a good idea to bring a guest book to record contact
information from people who express interest in your work.
Please refer to the links
below about the requirements for Sausalito business licenses. If
you have any questions as to whether you are required to obtain one,
please call Louise Ho, Director of Sausalito's Finance Department at
City Hall and she will field your inquiries. Please note, whether or
not you reside in incorporated Sausalito has no bearing as to whether
you will be required to obtain a business license. Only Easel Artists
that wish to sell their work need to concern themselves with that.

All
submission will be equally considered. You don't have
to have to be a renowned artist. You may create in any artistic
discipline including but not limited to film, dance, performance
art, poetry and music. We are looking for artists that have
put time into developing their craft and have demonstrated
that they are accomplished in their medium. That is the only
criteria used to jury submissions. There are no considerations
for age and even youths are welcome to submit their work.
